During this sensitive time its important to make sure that you consider all the things that are important to your loved one.. Below is a reported case in the Daily Mirror where a national funeral company failed to embalm almost 2000 bodies even though they had actually taken money for this.
Co-operative Funeral Care failed to embalm almost 2,000 bodies despite charging for the service
Undertakers apologised and sources say three employees have been sacked for taking thousands of pounds from grieving relatives and then failing to embalm bodies
A top undertakers failed to embalm almost 2,000 bodies despite charging grieving relatives for the service.
Co-operative Funeral Care last night apologised and a source revealed that three employees had been sacked for “collusion”.
But families who paid tens of thousands of pounds to have the remains of their loved ones preserved were furious.
The group says it has returned all the charges to 1,730 relatives in Staffordshire and Cheshire along with a cash payout. Eight premises in Stoke and Crewe were involved. In the North East 130 families were contacted about similar errors blamed on lax record keeping. Angry families called the response “derisory”. Emma Dainty, 31, of Stafford, said the Co-op failed to embalm grandad Philip Bayley.
She claimed that just before his funeral they received three insistent calls ordering them not to visit Mr Bayley to say their final goodbyes as his body was in “too poor condition” to be viewed because of “pills he had taken”.
Emma said: “They denied us the chance to say goodbye. They knew they’d be caught having not embalmed him. We got a £60 refund and a £100 goodwill gesture. They lied to us.”
Andrew Pate, of Crewe, blasted as “insulting” the £35 refund and £100 payment for his gran.
The latest scandal to blight the Co-op – already hit by a banking crisis – emerged after an audit.
The group said no fraud was involved and nobody benefited financially.
